Should I get LEDs or HIDs for my Vehicle? Both have pros and cons.

Should I get LEDs or HIDs for my Vehicle? Both have pros and cons.

So, which is better, LED or HID? There is no easy answer and there are many factors to consider but here are some basic things for you to look at to help you decide:

LED PROS

- Instant on. LEDs are at full light power just as you turn them ON.

- Easy installation. LEDs usually just plug into the existing light plug and work straight out of the box.

- Easy problem solving. Flickering LEDs are easily solved by installing  canbus modules.

- High-end LED kits have adjustable beam for best light projection even in projector lights.

- There are many  different LED bulb designs and many LED chip manufacturers fitting any budget.

LED CONS

- Most are NOT as bright as HIDs.  8G Series is the only one that the light output is equivalent to 35W HIDs.

- All LED kits create less much heat than HIDs, so they're not suitable for areas with long winters.

- Fan cooled LED kits may have fan failures under harsh weather conditions such as extreme temp or heavy dust.

- May not be the best in projector housings because of the location of the LEDs on the bulb.

- Thickness of the LED bulb's body creates areas without light. The thicker the bulb the larger the area.

- LEDs have been on the market for a short time and need time to prove themselves.

HID PROS

- Have been around for a long time and are proven to last 4-5 years.

- Are very bright and come in  35W55W, and 75W power configurations.

- HID ballasts are getting smaller and offer fast start (3-5 seconds to full brightness).

ASIC canbus HID ballasts solve flickering and lights shutting off problems.

- Bulbs offer 360 degree light.

HID CONS

- Installations may require  relays, resistors, capacitors, and always use larger external ballasts.

- Bulb power wires may require modification to dust caps such as drilling a 1" hole to run the wires through it.

- Bulbs' return wire creates a very small shadow.
