9005 LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) – Why Compatibility Matters

Many Mazda and Honda vehicles use their 9005 high-beam bulbs as daytime running lights (DRLs). However, installing standard or incompatible 9005 LED bulbs can lead to a number of issues, including flickering, intermittent operation, or bulbs that simply won't illuminate in DRL mode.

Why does this happen?

There are two common causes:

1. Flickering – Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)

Some vehicles use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control DRL brightness. This technology rapidly cycles power on and off to reduce the light output. Many LED drivers aren't designed to handle these rapid power fluctuations, resulting in noticeable flickering or inconsistent operation.

2. DRLs Not Illuminating – Insufficient Operating Voltage

Many vehicles reduce the voltage supplied to their high-beam bulbs when operating in DRL mode. Standard LED kits typically require a minimum operating voltage of 9V or higher, even when advertised with a 12–24V rating. When the vehicle supplies only 6V or less, these LEDs may fail to turn on altogether.

The solution is to use low-voltage-compatible LED kits specifically designed to operate at reduced DRL voltages, ideally down to 6V.

Our Recommended 6V Compatible LED Kits

Below are two LED kits capable of operating at reduced DRL voltages. They're suitable for Mazda and Honda applications, as well as other vehicles that use their high-beam bulbs as daytime running lights.

Choosing the right LED technology makes all the difference between an installation that works intermittently and one that performs as intended in both DRL and full-power high-beam modes.
