2012 Nissan Altima – LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) Troubleshooting & Solution
The Challenge: Low-Voltage DRL Operation
The 2012 Nissan Altima uses its high-beam bulbs for daytime running lights (DRLs). In DRL mode, the vehicle supplies reduced voltage to the bulbs, which can prevent many aftermarket LED conversion kits from operating correctly.
Our H11 M3 LED conversion kits were our first choice for this application because they are designed to operate at the low voltage used by 6V DRL systems.
During the initial installation, both LED bulbs illuminated correctly. However, after a few minutes of operation, the system became unstable: one bulb produced only a fraction of its normal light output, while the other failed to illuminate entirely. Further troubleshooting was required to identify a reliable solution.
Solution 1: Installing Anti-Flicker CANBUS Modules on Both Sides
We initially installed a second-generation H11 anti-flicker CANBUS module in series with each LED bulb. The initial results were encouraging, as both bulbs remained illuminated at reduced brightness in DRL mode.
Unfortunately, the improvement was temporary. After restarting the vehicle, the driver's-side bulb illuminated only faintly and began flickering, while the passenger-side bulb remained completely off.
This confirmed that installing a CANBUS module on each side was not a reliable solution for this vehicle's DRL circuit.
Solution 2: Using a Single CANBUS Module
Our next approach was to simplify the setup by taking the interconnected nature of the DRL circuit into account.
We removed the CANBUS module from the driver's side entirely, leaving the LED bulb connected directly to the vehicle's wiring. We then retained a single second-generation H11 anti-flicker CANBUS module on the passenger side only.
The result was exactly what we were looking for. Both LED bulbs illuminated correctly in DRL mode, operated at the expected reduced brightness, and remained free of flickering.
By using just one CANBUS module instead of two, we achieved stable operation without unnecessary additional components.
Final Result
This installation demonstrates that converting the 2012 Nissan Altima's low-voltage DRL system to LED lighting may require more than simply choosing a compatible bulb. The interaction between the vehicle's DRL circuit and aftermarket electronics can make the installation configuration just as important as the LED kit itself.
For this particular installation, one second-generation H11 anti-flicker CANBUS module on the passenger side, with no module on the driver's side, provided the successful solution.
Important: Correct DRL Testing Procedure
The Altima's DRLs will not necessarily activate under every operating condition. To verify their operation, ensure that all of the following conditions are met:
-
The engine is running.
-
The transmission is in D (Drive).
-
The headlight switch is set to AUTO.
-
The parking brake is fully released.
-
Testing is performed during daylight conditions.
If the DRLs do not illuminate, verify these operating conditions before concluding that the installation has failed.
Installation note: This configuration was successful on the vehicle tested. Results may vary depending on the LED kit, CANBUS module, and vehicle wiring configuration.
